PEGGY FERRIS BIO

Born into solid Americana in the 1950’s, experiencing the cultural reset of the 60’s and entering college in the 70’s, Peggy Ferris’s kaleidoscopic past got off to a roaring start.

Graduating college with a respectable degree in English, the adventures were just beginning. Having been severely discouraged from pursuing art in college, she defiantly and abruptly left for Holland in 1977 seeking an education and experiences connected to the fine arts. A 7-month charter turned into a two year stint in The Hague, where she learned to speak fluent Dutch and attended the Royal Academy of Art, studying graphic design, apprenticing with a local design firm and involving herself in the thriving and highly government-supported art scene.

At the behest of her parents she eventually returned to the US and enrolled in Art Center College of Design in Pasadena where she graduated with honors in graphic design and packaging. Upon graduation she received the prestigious Dale Brubaker award, given to one student of outstanding merit. Tragically unemployable, however, she got fired from two consecutive jobs in LA following graduation and immediately made her way back to Santa Barbara, where her 20+ career as sole proprietor of Peggy Ferris Design was successfully launched. During these years her clients included such diverse concerns as Elvis Presley’s Graceland and Forest Lawn Mortuary.

In the early 2000’s she had had enough and returned to the fine arts, initially working in a hard-edge style she had experimented with in Holland. Eventually transitioning to a looser gestural form of abstraction her artistic sensibilities are influenced and informed by her decades in the design world and her ongoing interest in and development of mark-making.

Today she lives and works in the Foothills of Santa Barbara, running her live/work space “Chaparral Studios” where she continues to paint as well as hosting workshops and art and poetry events.
